Be alert for:

A new spot that was not there before

A spot that is growing, changing, or spreading

A sore that does not heal

A lesion that bleeds, crusts, or becomes itchy

A spot that looks noticeably different from your other moles ("the ugly duckling sign")

The ABCDE Warning Signs of Melanoma

When assessing moles or pigmented lesions, remember the ABCDE rule:

A – Asymmetry One half of the spot does not match the other.

B – Border The edges are irregular, blurred, or uneven.

C – Colour The lesion has multiple colours or an uneven colour distribution.

D – Diameter The spot is larger than 6 mm, although melanomas can be smaller.

E – Evolving The lesion is changing in size, shape, colour, or symptoms.

When to See a Dermatologist

Arrange a professional skin examination if you notice:

Any of the ABCDE warning signs

A new or changing lesion

A non-healing sore

A growth that bleeds, crusts, or becomes painful

Any spot that concerns you

Professional Skin Checks

While regular self-examinations are important, they should not replace professional skin assessments. Individuals with a personal or family history of skin cancer, a large number of moles, fair skin, significant sun exposure, or a weakened immune system may benefit from regular skin checks performed by a dermatologist.
